Araripe Manakin (male)
The Araripe Manakin is a typical bird of the Araripe Plateau region in Ceará, Brazil.
This little bird is found in the Araripe Plateau region (mainly in the state of Ceará). It is popularly known as "galo-da-mata" (forest rooster) and "língua-de-tamanduá" (anteater's tongue).
Extinction Risk
The primary threat to the extinction of this species is human encroachment in forest areas in the Chapada do Araripe, leading to vegetation reduction. Unfortunately, the Araripe Manakin is in a critically endangered state.
In the past, it was common in the moist forests on the slopes of the Chapada do Araripe. Discovered only in 1996, the Araripe Manakin is the most threatened bird species in Brazil. It is believed that today there are fewer than 800 individuals in the wild.
